From 2nd to 6th August 2008, WCS China tiger team and Mr. Lang, head of education department of Hunchun Nature Reserve management bureau organized movie nights for locals in tiger habitat. It was to provide useful information about the tiger -human conflict management in more effective and friendly way to locals in tiger habitat for the coexistence between tiger and communities.
Information was divided into two parts;
1. Ways to live with tigers – how to react when encounter a tiger and how to prevent tiger attacks,
2. Policy and procedures for Anya Lim Program Officer Tiger Program Hunchun office WCS China for compensating farmers for livestock killed by tigers.
During the presentation, locals were especially interested in and wanted to know more details of the compensation scheme.
We visited five villages in the tiger habitat one by one with equipment to play movie and some snacks for the friendship in the evening. Those villages are Fenshuiling, Xiacaomao, Lanjiacun, Lishugou and Guandaogou. They have had the most tiger attacks around the Hunchun Nature Reserve. For this activity each village head helped to arrange the place and to gather villagers. After short and important presentations, all participants enjoyed movie with snacks. Locals were satisfied with this activity, and some people mentioned that they wished to have this event again.
We are truly thanks to all participants for their hospitality and support.
