India is apparently ready to announce carbon emissions reduction targets a few days before the opening of the UN climate conference next week, writes Reuters. The news agency has obtained provisional figures showing that the Indian government thinks it is possible to cut its carbon intensity by 24 percent in 2020. By 2030, India estimates it could achieve a reduction in carbon emissions by 37 percent from 2005 levels. According to Reuters’ government sources, India’s Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh will announce the target – or a range of targets – in Parliament on Thursday. This means that apparently India – the fourth largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world – will follow the two top emitters, US and China, and not arrive at the UN climate conference empty-handed. The US and China have both recently announced their emission targets. According to Reuters, India's carbon intensity cut figures are based on a projection that the country would achieve 20 percent energy efficiency by 2020 from 2007 levels. Carbon intensity is the amount of carbon dioxide emitted for each unit of gross domestic product. This method for measurement relates carbon emission reductions to economic growth.
