COP 15 - COPENHAGEN: US official: Leaders may join Obama at climate talks - 01/12/2009 07:05

A US administration official says some world leaders may change their schedules so they can attend the upcoming climate conference in Copenhagen the same day as President Barack Obama.

US President Barack Obama will attend the UN climate conference in Copenhagen on Dec. 9 before heading to Oslo to accept the Nobel Peace Prize. At least 90 other world leaders will also attend the conference, though most are expected to arrive the following week. Obama will personally commit the US to a goal of substantially cutting greenhouse gases. He will insist America is ready to tackle global warming despite resistance in Congress over higher energy costs for businesses and homeowners. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because final decisions on the leaders' schedules have not been made.
