On January 20, Kathleen Rogers, President of Earth Day Network, along with Rep. Jay Inslee (WA), Mayor Becker of Salt Lake City, UT and local officials and leaders from the environmental community called on the United States Congress to pass comprehensive climate legislation by Earth Day, April 22, 2010. Denis Hayes, organizer of Earth Day 1970, leaders from the League of Conservation Voters, National Wildlife Federation and Greenpeace USA joined Earth Day Network in setting a deadline for federal action against climate change.
The press conference focused on the United States' opportunity to show leadership in the global marketplace by building a clean energy economy. Speakers called for governmental leadership to help solve climate change, create new green jobs and reduce U.S. dependence on fossil fuels.
In addition to calling on Congress to pass legislation by April 22, Rogers sought Congress' adjournment on Earth Day, to meet with their constituents and demonstrate their commitment to passing a climate bill. This action would coincide with Earth Day Network's Global Day of Conversation, which brings together mayors and locally-elected leaders with their constituents to discuss ways their community can move toward a more sustainable, clean energy economy.
